Past                                                  Present                                               Future
* The past is what happened since you were born until before a while...
* The present is what is happening at the moment...
* The future is what will happen after a moment and on.

What is the past?
The past is a part of our life. It's something (Action, doing, saying...etc) are completely DONE whether several minutes ago, or hundred years ago.

When do we use it?
We always use the past when we want to tell people what happened. For example, When you get home back from school, and you want to tell your parents what happened in school, you will use the past tens. Because, what happened in the school is something done and sometimes has no relation at the same moment that you are telling your them what happened.

Why do we use past?
We use it to make differences between our present, future and our past. To make differences between YESTERDAY and TODAY.

Is it better to use the past or the present?
It is easier to use the present in our speeches, conversations and chats, but it's better to use the past for the past.

NOTE,

Jokes are always said in the PRESENT.

why jokes are always said in the present?
Jokes usually are not TRUE, and all those untruthful stories are said in the present.

Why don't we say Jokes using the future tense?
We don not use the future tense when we are telling a joke, because that won't make a sense.

The past tense has several kinds; I'll write them with examples here;

1. Past Simple, which the verb takes -ed at the end.
Ex. I visited Josephine yesterday.

2. Past continues, which the  verb takes -ing at the end.
Ex. I was sleeping, when the phone rang.
Note that, the helping verb "was" came before the verb, just to help it to take "ing" at the end. We get from this that there is always "was, were" before the the verb to help it to take "ing" unless the sentence is passive.

3. Past Perfect, which the verb get "had" before it.
Ex. I had eaten a burger.
Note, here is a complete different thing, when we used "had" in the example, we didn't use the past tense of the verb, we used the past participle of the verb, which is the third form. (eat, ate and eaten).
