What is an Essay?

    Essays are everywhere -in books- magazines, newspapers, and other printed material. An essay is short collection of paragraphs that presents facts, opinions, and ideas on a topic. Topics can range from a description of a visit to Disney World to an argument about capital punishment.

Kinds of Essays.

    There are different ways to write an essay. The method that a writer choose is based on the topic of the essay and the kind of essay that presents the topic in the best way. For example, in an essay that compares Civil War weapons with World War II weapons, the writer would use a comparison format.

What are the parts of an essay?

            Notice that an essay always has three basic parts: the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. The introduction is the first paragraph, the conclusion is the last paragraph, and the body consists of the paragraphs in between.

What's the hook in the essay?

            The opening sentence of an essay is called the hook. A hook in writing is used to "catch" readers and get their interest so that they will want to read the essay.

What's the thesis statement in the paragraph?

          The last sentence in a paragraph is the thesis statement. It states the main idea of the essay and tells what the organization of the information will be.

What's the topic sentence in the paragraph?

            Every good paragraph has a topic sentence. The topic sentence tells the reader the main topic of the paragraph. Sometimes it also gives the reader a hint about the writer's purpose.

What are the supporting sentences in the paragraph?

            The supporting sentences in an essay are in the body. Supporting sentences always relate to the topic sentence of the paragraph in which they occur. Common supporting sentences give examples, reasons, facts, or more specific information. Without supporting sentences, an essay would be nothing more than a general outline.

What's the conclusion?

          It's important for an essay to have a good conclusion. The introduction and the conclusion often share some ideas and words.
