Remember, press releases are a "media relations" tool. They are not a backlink tool. You get enormously more visitors and more exposure.
Potentially, you get more backlinks from quality sources seeing your news. This is if the tool is used properly. Plus, you need to follow a few simple rules:

- ONLY send a press release if there is something newsworthy to say.
If you say, "I'm launching a new website" this isn't newsworthy. Websites come a dime a dozen. You must be able to tell the media why your website is unique. Or, at least, say why it is an improvement over others in the niche. Or, have something happening which ties the launch into something (it could be in the news, getting a charity involved, or partnering with a much larger website/company, etc.).

Who, what, when, where, and why should be in the first paragraph. Be sure your headline is more descriptive of the news event than just catchy garbage. Ideally, it is a combination of "catchy" and descriptive. Be sure it doesn't read like fluff. Provide adequate contact information. There should be decent boilerplate with general company information so the media can get background.
Speak to the audience most likely to read your release. This is the media, not your general target readership.
Worry less about releasing yet more wire spam, by considering only things like keyword density. Leave this for your website. Focus on one or two won't hurt. However, don't let the media feel you are writing for a machine, and not them. Likely, you immediately lose great publicity opportunities.
- Always manually submit to as many relevant places as possible.
This can range from niche blogs to local papers to major industry websites). This is in addition to submitting to newswires.
Usually, the best coverage comes from relationship-building and personal interaction with the media. It does not come from a shot in the dark.
