SEASON 3

Here are all the episode this season in which Kes plays a large part in the story or has some good character moments, i.e. essential Kes viewing!

Voyager's Cast in the 3rd Season (1996-97)

Left: "Warlord" trailer. Right: "Before and After" trailer.

"Basics" Part 2Held captive by savages!

Stranded on a desolate planet ravaged by earthquakes and vicious cave creatures, the crew seeks food and shelter. Meanwhile, the Kazon and have taken over Voyager and the Doctor and Ensign Suder are the crew's only hope. Kes helps Samantha Wildman care for her baby when they're stranded on the planet. Kes and Neelix are kidnapped by the primitive humanoid natives! The conclusion to Voyager's first cliff-hanger, and a fantastic one, the crew stranded on a dangerous planet, it had to be a horrible wait to see what would happen! The Kazon on-going plot is wrapped up, I did like them as an enemy and even better with the devious Seska. It's a shame she dies, but the bad guys must! She returns twice more though.

Persuading Dr. Zimmerman to save the EMH

"The Swarm"

Voyager encounters a species who attack any outsider who dares to enter their territory, swarming in a mass like angry insects. In Sickbay, the Doctor can't remember how to complete an operation; the Emergency Medical Hologram's memory circuits seem to be degrading. The ship is under attack and all the crew are occupied, leaving Kes as the only one able to save the Doctor. Kes deeply cares for him and won't give up. She interacts with Lewis Zimmerman, the EMH programme's creator and ends up giving him the idea of how to save him. An excellent episode, A-plot is action packing with an interesting new species and B-plot is character driven.

Kes ventures into the shrine, bad move!

"Sacred Ground"

Kes ventures into a shrine of the Nechisti Order and is struck by a mysterious energy burst, rendering her comatose. Unfortunately, when back on the ship, the Doctor can't help Kes because he doesn't understand her condition. The local magistrate tells Janeway that Kes violated a holy place that only monks may enter -- and only after they have undergone a purification ritual to protect them from the energy field. Later, Neelix uncovers an ancient story of a king who went through the ritual to save his comatose son's life. Janeway requests permission to do the same. Not much Kes in this episode but its an outstanding episode for Janeway, all that she goes through to save Kes!

A posessed and powerful Kes!

"Warlord"

Kes is posessed by a powerful and ruthless ruler, Tieran, on an alien world. In Star Trek every character seems to have an episode where they go evil and/or get posessed. Given her small size compared to the actors she works with in this episode, Jennifer still has a strong phsyical presence because of her fantastic acting here. The inner turmoil in the mind of Tieran/Kes shows how strong willed Kes is and how powerful she can be. After Kes has been posessed she breaks up with Neelix and they don't get back together afterwards, rather odd. But it allowed for expansion of the character, a romance in "Darkling" and a future with Tom Paris in "Before and After." One of my favourite episodes, a showcase for Jennifer.

"Darkling"A very creepy Doctor kidnaps Kes!

Voyager visits an outpost of the Mikhal Travellers, a gypsy-like band of space explorers who are willing to share their knowledge of the territory Voyager is about to enter. As Kes oversees the transfer of medical supplies to the group, she becomes infatuated with Zahir, a Mikhal pilot. In the meantime, the Doctor is engaged in a new project: adding personality subroutines of famous historical figures, but the subroutines interact unpredictably and the Doctor turns into something rather terrifying! Kes is part of the away team assigned to go down to the Planet to trade for supplies and information about the upcoming area of space. She has her first romance other than Neelix, he's about twice her height but a very pleasant character. The 'evil doctor' is a great story to do, very scary the way he treats B'elanna! And Kes has a fantastic role here. It's as though Kes goes through the rebellious teenage phase of her life-span, neglecting responsibilities and staying up all night. The Doctor and Kes's stories are inter-linked here, providing one of the best episodes for both of them. When the Doctor kidnaps Kes, he throws himself and her off a cliff but they're beamed back in time, upright!

"Before and After"A very good alternate future

Kes finds herself in Sickbay, on the verge of death. The Doctor activates something he calls a bio-temporal chamber and Kes experiences a shift in perception. She finds herself with a boy - apparently her grandson Andrew - who gives her a belated birthday gift. The Doctor tells her he's going to put her into the bio-temporal chamber to prolong her life. Suddenly Kes awakens in her quarters, where Andrew is still working on the present that he already gave her. Kes meets Linnis, her daughter, who is married to Harry Kim. Linnis' father is Tom Paris, who is also Kes' husband. As Kes tries to take all this in she finds herself celebrating her ninth birthday with her family and friends. Kes continues to jump backwards in time to a period of when Voyager is under attack by the Krenim seen next season in "Year of Hell". The jumps continue and she works with the Doctor to try to find a way to stop it. Magnificent yet again! I love this episode so much. What a great Season! They use this as a device to give Kes long hair in future episodes, a great look.

QUOTES:
Kes: It's as though I came into existence at the moment of my own death with any memories. I've been living my life backwards ever since jumping progressively to earlier moments in my life accumulating memories and experiences as I go. Your past has become my future.

Concern over the Borg of course!

"Scorpion" Part 1

Voyager enters Borg space and attempts to find a way through it. Kes assists the Doctor in further examining the Borg corpse found in "Blood Fever" hoping for a defence. Kes experiences visions as her telepathic and mental abilities drastically increase. She sees dozens of Borg corpses, providing clues to the fact that a new alien species, Species 8472, is in existence, more powerful than the Borg. She gets a vision of Harry being attacked but it’s too late. The Borg's first appearance in Voyager is by far the best, they seem to get dumbed down later on, just like what happened in Next Gen. Kes is very important here showing as much potential as ever, unfortunately in the gap between Seasons 3 and 4 there would be a change...

And here's Kes's role in every other episode this season...

Coming soon...
