Problem Drugs

What are problem drugs in India?
During seven-ties
we had a satisfactory drug situation as we were producing all the basic drugs.
Public sector and private sector drug industry were active. Drugs prices were
low compared to any other countries in the world.
Now the situation
is far from satisfactory. Drug prices are going up, public sector drug
companies are closing and multinational drug companies are once again the
leaders. The drug situation will become bad to worse if TRIPS agreement comes
into effect.
A large number of
drugs are produced as combinations and these combinations bring more profits to
the drug companies, but it causes more complications and cost more to
consumers. Though there is no mention about these drugs in text books such
drugs are there in the Indian market.
Some drugs have
no pharmalogical basis. Eg. Serratiopeptidase.
There are sold as
drugs. These drugs increase the cost of the therapy and may cause side effects.
Why should the patient spend more and invite trouble without any benefits.
Some of the drugs
in the Indian market are obviously harmful. Eg. Analgin, Nimesulide etc., It is
true that these are not banned by the government of India, but that does not
mean that they are safe. There are so many banned drugs (banned abroad) worth
banning and these are bannable drugs.
This booklet
enlists and gives brief information about some of these drugs.
Lets make drug
use safe, lets demand that govt. ban all these drugs which are inessential and
harmful.
To consumers it
is tempting to discuss about drugs, which are hazardous only. This creates a
false assumption that these few drugs are the problem and that, if they are
dealt with, we will be left with a selection of medicines, that are of high
quality and meet health needs. But unfortunately this is not true. What makes a
drug a problem drug is not so much its inherent pharmacological risks, but the
way it is promoted by drug industry, how it is prescribed subsequently by
doctors and it is ultimately used by the patient itself. It is impossible to
talk about the “safety” of medicines as it was a laboratory problem .By
misleading promotion, in the wrong hands or at the wrong time, even the most
quality controlled medicine becomes transformed from a life saver to a life
threatner. Two such examples are misuse of ant-microbial and psychotropic
drugs. The indiscriminate use of anti-microbial in people resulting in
resistance to cheaper and safer drugs can stretch beyond a single patient to
encompass the globe. So also psychotropic drugs, like any other drug, when
promoted misleadingly and in wrong hands can produce unlimited sufferings for
the patient and his family at large. So for proper use (rational use) of a drug
it is equally important that the consumer (not just the doctor) is equally made
aware of certain basic information, regarding drugs. This is a small attempt.
