Cough and Cold Remedies
Everyday
thousands of people around the world come down with ‘common cold’.
The symptoms
are:- SORE THROAT, RUNNING NOSE, SNEEZES, MILD FEVER, SOME ACHES AND PAINS AND
AT TIMES IRRITATING COUGH.
The cause is one
among the different groups of virus. The common cold is itself limiting and
there is no drug which prevents colds or reduces their duration. Most
decongestants (nasal drops which release the blocked nose during the attack
cold) may work for some time, however they are liable to lead to ‘rebound
effect’ (where in the nasal block increase in severity) and also the nasal
drops on prolonged use can cause of loss of smell. A safe alternate is to put
few drops of Normal Saline along with or followed by steam inhalation.
COUGHS – A cough is generally a useful
reflex which tries to clear the air passage of sputum that is excessively
produced during the attack of common cold or cough also tries to get rid of the
foreign bodies in the air passage.
There are
basically two types of drugs for treating cough – expectorants and
suppressants.
One of the most
irrational types of cough remedies sold by the drug companies in the market is
a combination of ingredients that suppress cough. For example an expectorant
like Ammonium Chloride acts by bringing out the secretions in the lungs. A
cough suppressant on the other hand acts by suppressing the cough i.e. when the
cough is irritating the throat. An example is Codeine. It is clear that the two
are acting exactly opposite and when both are combined the combination does not
produce the needed benefits. An effective and reliable expectorant is simple
steam inhalation. For a cough arising as a result of irritation in the throat a
glass of hot water, saline gargle and peppermint would give much relief. And
would avoid all the side effects that the drug that you would be taking for
common cold.
Most of the cough
and cold remedies contain Phenylpropalamine, a very dangerous drug which causes
paralysis of limbs due to haemorrhage in brain. This drug is withdrawn in most
of the developed countries.
Remember the
popular saying “If you take medicines then it takes one week for cold to go or
else it takes seven days”. Common cold is often self limiting and it rarely
needs an antibiotics. Never take injections for common cold. It is effective to
take safe and home made herbal teas, hot water with ginger etc.,
